to be found within the town's borders. The key to Westport's recreational resources also lies within Westport's natural environment.

Westport, which is located in Bristol County, MA may be a summertime hot spot for beachgoers, but Westport's beauty stretches far beyond the white sands and into the rustic fields, winding roads and quaint New England neighborhoods.

Westport is the number one South Coast family destination for a day trip to enjoy sand and surf. Horseneck Beach, a state reservation, is spread across nearly 600 acres of barrier beach and salt marsh. The breezy winds make for great windsurfing, and there is plenty of room to lay your towel, with two miles of beach, most open to the public. There is also a 100-site campground, a snack hut, picnic facilities, restrooms and showers.

Agriculture and fishing remain vital components of Westport’s economy, but tourism has grown dramatically since the 1960’s when Interstate 195 and Route 88 were constructed to provide easy access to Horseneck Beach. Although Westport has become more of a bedroom community, in recent years, for people working in Boston and Providence, Westport's population of nearly 14,000 has had little impact on the rural flavor of its 61 square miles.

Gooseberry Neck, a peninsula also part of the Reservation, is located behind the sand dunes on Horseneck, and once was used by the Army in World War II. Today, Gooseberry is a fantastic place to explore the wonders of wildlife, with many species of plants and rocky shores brimming with crustaceans.

Westport is an environmental gem, with marshes and estuaries, inlets and woodlands. Horseneck is one of the premier birding locations in New England, and the Westport River has great shellfishing and more salt marsh acreage than any other Buzzards Bay embayment.
