While New Bedford is a city of approximately 100,000 people, New Bedford maintains a close-knit community feel. Recently named one of the top ten "Green Cities" in the country, New Bedford residents feel that its parks are breathtaking and its beaches gorgeous. Enhanced with festivals and celebrations throughout the year, New Bedford is a wonderful place to visit. The unbeatable quality of life relished by New Bedford residents makes New Bedford an even better place to live and raise a family.

New Bedford is a very unique city to live in. There are many different things to do in the New Bedford area. Boston is approx. 1 hour away, Providence, RI is only 45 minutes west, and Cape Cod and the islands are only a short distance away. The ocean in the New Bedford area offers a wide variety of things to do in the summer from boating and fishing to going to the beach for the day. The New Bedford Whaling Museum is a wonderful place to visit as well as the National Historical Park> surrounding the museum.

New Bedford has capitalized on its history by revitalizing the New Bedford downtown area and adding more restaurants, museums and attractions. Now, New Bedford visitors can walk through the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park. Created in 1996, the park encompasses 34 acres spread over 13 city blocks and includes a visitor center, the New Bedford Whaling Museum, the Seamen's Bethel, the schooner Ernestina and the Rotch-Jones-Duff House and the Garden Museum.

New Bedford offers a wide array of services and recreation to New Bedford residents. The Buttonwood Park Zoo showcases a variety of exotic and domestic wildlife. The park itself is a great place to walk, picnic or paddleboat. New Bedford boasts large, public beaches, with plenty of inlands to set sail. Here you will find no parking fees, easy access and few large crowds. A bike path loops by Fort Taber, which overlooks Clark's Cove and Buzzard's Bay and runs by both the east and west beaches.

Fishing still constitutes a livelihood for many New Bedford residents, but New Bedford has diversified its business pursuits in recent years. Downtown New Bedford hosts restaurants, banks, stores and dozens of offices. The New Bedford Industrial Park is home to larger businesses, many of which are high technology. And there is plenty of mom and pop stores, as well as chain department stores and shopping plazas, scattered throughout New Bedford to meet everyday needs.

There are approximately 23 New Bedford public elementary schools, 3 New Bedford junior high schools and 2 New Bedford high schools; ensuring getting to school from any point in New Bedford is convenient. New Bedford also boasts several private schools and a new charter school.

New Bedford real estate buying in this eclectic city remains popular for many reasons, including a varied array of prices and home types. The New Bedford real estate market remains steady. New Bedford is a very sought after area, and it is easy to see why!

New Bedford and the surrounding community is a wonderful place to raise a family. There is a wide variety of New Bedford home style, as well as price ranges. In New Bedford center there are mostly multi-family (2 or more units) homes; There are some single family homes near the center of New Bedford and there are some beautiful old Victorian homes, many of these homes date back to the days of whaling. As you move out from New Bedford center more of the houses become single family. The surrounding towns of Acushnet, Freetown, Dartmouth, Westport, Fairhaven, Marion, Mattapoisett, Rochester and Lakeville are mostly single family homes. The median sales price in New Bedford is approximately $125,000. The prices for New Bedford homes can vary greatly by area. It is not uncommon to find investment properties needing work in the $100,000 price range. In the surrounding towns the houses can be priced anywhere from $175,000 to $1 million plus estates on the water.
